I have filed a Pro Se motion to appeal my NYC criminal misdemeanor conviction and am seeking assistance regarding this Appellate brief to be completed within 30 days. Flash card writer wanted for law exam

This law job posting was sent to us by a reader, who writes: "If that one doesn't belong at the top, I don't know what does"...

I want to learn a lot about the Texas Family Code and the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure fast. My goal is to prepare to take the Board Certification Exam in family law offered by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

I learn quickly using an electronic flash card program called "Before You Know It." But I don't have time to sit down and go through the code and rules, write flash cards, and then study all the flash cards I've written. I only have time to study the flash cards you have written.

So that's the job, going through the Texas Family Code and the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, and breaking each section or rule down into a discrete question and answer that will fit neatly into the format of the "Before You Know It" flash card system.

I'll give you the money it costs to buy the software and show you many examples of the cards I have already written, so you get the idea of what I want.

If I hire you, you will compete to keep the job. That is to say, initially I will hire two people to do this job, and you two will work on the exact same set of code sections. I'll pay you each $100 and then wait one week to see the quality and quantity of cards that you produce. After I've had a chance to review your work, and that of your competitor, I'll decide who to hire to do this on a more long term basis.

Beyond my goal to take the Board Certification Exam, my goal is to develop these electronic flash cards into a system to sell to other lawyers who want to prepare for the exam. You will have to sign an intellectual property agreement just to make clear that though you've written the cards, I will retain the intellectual property rights in them.

Temporary attorney job near Penn State

This job was sent to us by a reader, who did some investigating and found: "So basically, it's $25/hour less FICA payroll taxes (15.3% as a self-employed person (double the normal 7.65% rate)) less malpractice insurance premia and no benefits or reimbursement of incidental expenses to work in the middle of nowhere in a non-at will position."

TEMPORARY/FULL-TIME: Our corporate client is seeking 2 fairly junior attorneys with about 1 - 3 years of experience and a law license in at least one state, to undertake a document review on-site in Bellefonte, PA, which is about 10 miles from University Park, State College, PA. The 2 attorneys needed would be reviewing and tagging documents for further action, at the direction of, and under the supervision of, our client. IMMEDIATE NEED. To be considered and contacted, you MUST include your 1099 hourly rate, and, your resume. Please indicate your availability to interview and to start. Indicate what duration you can do.

Follow up e-mail response from Assigned Counsel:

I'd first need you to understand and acknowledge back to me that you would not be reimbursed for travel to and from Bellefonte, or, for food/lodging in or around Bellefonte or for any other incidental expenses. You would be a pure 1099 independent contractor for the assignment.

You should also be aware that neither we, nor our client, provides professional liability insurance for you. Likewise, we do not deduct taxes from the checks you would receive for work performed, nor do we provide you with benefits of any kind. Again, this is a straight hourly rate (regardless of the number of hours worked per week), 1099 independent contractor assignment.

As to your rate: my client is seeking a very modest rate. If you could do $25/hour, please let me know.

You should also know that it is anticipated that this Temp/FT assignment would last about 3 months, so I'd need you to confirm to me that you could commit to this duration. I could submit you as someone who is able to "work Temp/FT for 3 months, and beyond that duration is negotiable," _or_ I could present you as someone who could commit to the 3 months, and also that you are fine with an "open-ended" duration, if you prefer I introduce you that way. Flexibility is always a good thing to exhibit to a client...

Reporter wants to interview legal professional who's been displaced by technology

I'm a writer with the Brooklyn Ink and a student at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, and I'm currently in the process of writing an article on e-discovery technology's effect on the legal industry. I'm trying to show that though some associate level and paralegal jobs are displaced by the technology — because document review can be done cheaper and more efficiently by software than people, for example — other legal jobs have come to exist as a result: for every job destroyed, another is created. I've found people who have created jobs in the industry, but I'm struggling to find paralegals or associates who have lost their jobs because a firm decided to use more e-discovery and less manual review. So I was wondering if you had any suggestions. Do you know of any specific people who have lost their jobs — even if was only on a temporarily basis, and they have since found work elsewhere — because of this software? If not, do you perhaps know of any companies who have recently shed workers because of investment in e-discovery technology?

I'm sure you're busy, but an interview with someone who's been displaced is a central part of this story, and I'm afraid it won't come together without one. My deadline is this Friday, so I'd be grateful for any help or advice you could offer before then.

However, being busy and without litigation experience, I would like to get some help from someone who can do factual research, a little legal research, FOIA requests, review of documents, first drafts of basic legal documents (I'm sure I'll edit it to death, so I don't need a brilliant writer, but I do need someone detailed oriented to help me with the process and to make sure I'm using all the right forms), maybe join a deposition and help preparing questions, and so on. All around help. Rockland county experience a plus, but anyone who thinks that's irrelevant because they can figure out local practice is welcome. Because this is a personal legal matter that I couldn't afford to pursue at normal outside lawyer rates, this is only a job for someone who can basically work at a personal assistant's rate. I figure this will drag on for months and that we'll have 5, 10 or 20 hrs/week of work to do on average (and a lot more if we get a big discovery request through), but I really haven't been through this before so am not sure.

Denver attorney wanted for "a very unique position"

Thanks to the reader who sent this job opportunity to us this. Job highlights:  "Being athletic is ... preferred. We do not advocate a lot of prescription drug use ...  The right attorney for this career will have to be willing to work on advertising and bring advertising experience with them ... The office is little and shared ...  The attorney we hire will not be hateful and spiteful to his/her staff ... We do require someone with at least five years experience as an attorney ... Compensation: $2000.00 (Winter) - $6000.00 (Summer)"...

This is unique position. You will be the only attorney who oversees the work performed. You will have to be responsible. You will be responsible for COLTAF funds and paying billing cycle as work is performed. This will not include disparaging comments to colleagues. The attorney who needs this career will be humane and gifted and sharing and caring. We need someone who loves what they do and is not the only one who is right. The attorney we are looking for is experienced at knowing their is talent and knowledge in everyone, not just them. Narcicistic leadership is troublesome and can cause to much hatred. Hence, we need an attorney who is willing to understand both sides and not only theirs. We need some selflessness and some selfishness, but an even balance of the two, not just someone into themselves. These are important characteristics. Just because everyone needs and wants a career, but they do not need to be constantly wrong to keep it. We need someone with compassion and direct effect.

This position is open for an attorney only. Being athletic is not required but preferred. Being a morning person will increase your chances at working here. You will also be required to pass a drug and alcohol screening. We do not advocate a lot of prescription drug use either.

The right attorney for this career will have to be willing to work on advertising and bring advertising experience with them.

The attorney we hire will not be hateful and spiteful to his/her staff. He/She will have tact, skill and grace. This position requires a high level of etiquette. We need an attorney who cares about the clients and understands, does not yell or act disgruntled by phone calls from clients and colleagues.

This position will be filled by an attorney who knows that they love what they do, has extra-curricular activities to help during the slow season. This attorney must be trustworthy, personable, and have the right attire for the occassion. Not always a suit and tie, however some.

COLTAF funds need to be distributed appropriately, but not so pinch penny that they are not even distributed at all for work that employees perform. Arguments and troublesome behavior over money that is earned and billed needs to be paid comfortably, our staff does not wish to fight like a third world country to be paid, and treated poorly and not worthy of funds earned. We are liberal and not conservative. Monies paid to staff are at times are large sums. We need an attorney who encourages business and building business, not setting limits because they have an adjusted student loan or low income housing or something that they are trying to accomplish other then helping their firm increase into something successful.

The office is little and shared. We are trying to build someone who is willing to help and loves what they do. Why? We wish to move into a bigger office with more room and we need a leader who is willing to work with us, not at us. We do not encourage or allow for meeting clients in homes or coffee houses, as this is against the code of conduct. Are you a man or a woman? We do not discriminate.

Also, we do require someone with at least five years experience as an attorney. We need an attorney who is seasoned in the field of law, we handle Bankruptcy, Divorce, Criminal, DUI, Traffic, Civil and other fields. We do not specialize.

Bilingual is helpful, not necessary.

Location: Denver
Compensation: $2000.00 (Winter) - $6000.00 (Summer)

This career opportunity aimed at recent bar takers was forwarded to us by a reader, who keenly notes: "Notice that this position is in 'South' San Francisco, a different municipality altogether from San Francisco. Entry-level attorney jobs in California's Bay Area

Every few months, this firm seems to advertise for entry-level lawyers on Craigslist. The good news is they've upped pay from $9 per hour to a whopping $14-$18 per hour! We would say don't spend it all in one place. But that might prove difficult in a pricey place like the San Francisco area.

We are a small but fast growing law firm in Mountain View California. We now represent more than 13,000 clients, many of which are startups and small businesses across the United States. We want to ensure that we regularly communicate with each of our clients, and that we have a process in place to make sure that our existing clients are happy with our services and have an attorney with whom they can regularly speak.

As such, we are looking for three Client Relations Attorneys to join our growing team. You must have excellent client relations/customer service skills, and must be able to put the needs of our clients first. You must be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state, and must be courtious and diligent. Must be personable, a team player, and must be patient with clients.

This is an Entry level position, and is an excellent opportunity for a recent law graduate who has passed a State Bar (California or another state) to grow with our law firm. You will gain experience directly working with and managing our existing clients in a professional and courtious manner, and get a chance to join the ground floor of a fast growing law firm. Initially, the majority of your time will involve serving as a non-bilalble Client Relations attorney, but you will also get opportunities to help on billable matters at our firm as our requirements increase.

Compensation: Small base non-billable client relations work - $14 to $18/hr to start
