Attorney jobs in Republic of Palau

The Republic of Palau, an island nation in the Western Pacific Ocean, is seeking applicants for Assistant Attorney General positions. Positions are available in criminal prosecution (1 position) and civil litigation and administrative matters (3 positions).

The services to be rendered in civil litigation and administrative matters are as follows:
• Advise agencies of the executive branch on legal and administrative matters, including the Ministry of Finance/Office of the Vice President of the Republic of Palau, Financial Institutions Commission and Environmental Quality Protection Board, among others.
• Pursue civil enforcement actions to enjoin unlawful conduct and to recover monies owed the Republic, including collection of delinquent taxes and delinquent debts at the National Hospital.
• Defend the Republic and its Ministries in civil litigation, including land cases, tort cases, immigration cases, election cases, tax cases and personnel actions, among others.
• Draft legislation, and rules and regulations for executive branch agencies.
• Review and make recommendations on international treaties and conventions.
• Review and provide comments on legislation proposed by the national legislature and draft legislation to be introduced by the executive branch to the legislature.
• Draft and review contracts and agreements entered into by the Republic, and advise agencies on procurement matters.

Palau’s legal system is based on U.S. federal law, and English is one of the official languages. Work is diverse and challenging in a relaxed yet professional atmosphere. Candidates should have strong analytic, writing and interpersonal skills and an ability to adapt well to cultural differences.

Membership in good standing in a U.S. state bar is required.

Applicants for the criminal prosecution position must have at least 3 years of experience as a criminal prosecutor. For the civil litigation and administrative positions, we seek one attorney with at least 10 years of experience, and two attorneys with at least 3 years of experience.

Salary ranges from $46,000.00 to $52,000.00 for the positions requiring at least 3 years experience, and from $58,000 to $62,000 for the position requiring at least 10 years of experience, plus benefits including roundtrip airfare and limited shipping of household effects.

  1. I worked out in the Pacific for a couple of years. It isn't that bad. You don't have long work weeks. You have leisurely lunches. The tax rate is low and you're normally given a housing allowance. To take home the same salary making $42,000 in the Pacific, you'd have to make at least $62,000 in the states. AND, the beaches in Palau are beautiful.
