Child advocate attorney job in NYC

Staff Attorney
Overview
Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) is a not-for-profit organization in New York City with a mission of ensuring that all children have access to quality public education. AFC’s work combines five strategies, including direct representation of individual children and parents, community education, public policy, litigation and information dissemination about the public schools. AFC works on behalf of children and youth who are at greatest risk of academic failure due to poverty, race, ethnicity, disability, homelessness, immigration status/limited English proficiency, or involvement in the child welfare or juvenile justice system. In addition, AFC harnesses the information learned through individual case advocacy to work for systemic change through coalition building and impact litigation.
AFC is seeking an attorney who will litigate cases filed in administrative forums and federal court on behalf of parents of students (children and teens) who have been deprived of their right to an education. The attorney will represent low-income parents of students with disabilities in administrative proceedings to obtain appropriate educational services. This representation involves direct case work to identify appropriate placements and services, drafting pleadings and motions, participation in school meetings, and appearance at administrative hearings. The attorney will also represent parents and students in systemic reform litigation with respect to education in New York City. This representation will require drafting pleadings, writing and arguing motions, conducting hearings, appearing in court at discovery conferences, supervising and undertaking document discovery, taking and defending depositions, negotiating settlements, and monitoring court-approved settlements.
